A damaged or worn out head may be rebuilt. This always depends on the amount of cyclinder-head distoration. Machining could bring the head surface back to normal and reconditioned the valve seats and guides will be need to be reconditioned

If your head is worn, a number of problems may become apparent. The Valve collets, camshaft rocker arms and guides could become noisy. Valve seals and valve covers may start leaking and valve springs may weaken. You will find the engine loses compression when you have problems in the valve train as the valves leak.

Classic cars all suffer from VSR (Valve seat recession). This was caused by the removal of lead from fuel. The lead acted as a lubricant as well as helping detonation which in turn helped keep temperatures down in the combustion chamber. The Engines valves and seats increase in temprature because of poor combustion. The valve seat temperature increases so much that the valve starts to recess it self in to the seat. This reduces valve tappet clearance until the vehicle will not run or develops an engine missfire. The cylinder head can easily be fixed by having new hardend valve seats fitted. All classic car Engines during the rebuild process and our classic reconditioned engines sold from stock have unleaded valve seatsfitted.

Cylinder head cracking appears to be occurring more frequently as manufacturers use mixed metals in engine assembly. The most usual cause of cylinder-heads cracking is an overheating engine and is compounded when motorist pour cool water into the engine which cause a thermal stress and head cracking.
